In Australia, the requirements for confined space qualifications are primarily governed by the Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations and the Australian Code of Practice for Confined Spaces.

Confined Space Entry Requirements:

  • If You Are Entering a Confined Space: According to the Australian Code of Practice for Confined Spaces, any person who is required to enter a confined space must have completed a specific confined space training course. This qualification ensures that individuals are aware of the risks and safety procedures associated with confined spaces.
  • If You Are Not Entering a Confined Space: If your role does not involve entering or working within confined spaces but rather involves supervision, management, or other tasks related to confined spaces, the need for a specific confined space qualification may not be mandatory. However, it is essential that you are familiar with the risks and safety requirements associated with confined spaces to ensure compliance and safety.

Important Considerations:

  • Work Health and Safety Duties: Regardless of your role, all workers have a duty under WHS regulations to ensure their own safety and the safety of others. If your work involves planning or overseeing confined space operations, you should have a good understanding of confined space hazards and safety protocols.
  • Company Policies: Employers may have their own policies and training requirements that go beyond the legal minimums. It’s advisable to check with your employer or safety officer to ensure you meet all required qualifications and training.

For detailed information and guidance, refer to the Australian Code of Practice for Confined Spaces and consult with your workplace safety representative.

Confined Space competency does not formally have an expiry date. However, it is industry standard to complete the training again (refresh) every 2 years.

Australian Standard AS2865-2009 Confined spaces requires ‘persons … be reassessed at appropriate intervals’. Industry regards reassessment on a two year cycle as good practice.

  • Working at Heights Training:
    • If your work involves tasks performed at height, completing a Working at Heights course is beneficial. This training covers the safety procedures and equipment used when working at elevated locations, complementing your confined space training.
